What does Cifas marker removal cost?
Updated 28 October 2026. General information, not legal advice.
In short
Challenging a Cifas marker yourself costs nothing: your Cifas report, a complaint to the bank, a Cifas review and the Financial Ombudsman are all free. Firms that do it for you charge from about £299 to £999, and solicitors £1,000 or more. A do-it-yourself pack sits in between. Nobody can honestly promise removal, whatever they charge.
The free routes
- Cifas report: free, at cifas.org.uk/dsar.
- Complaint to the bank: free.
- Cifas review: free. Cifas says it never charges for a report or a complaint.
- Financial Ombudsman Service: free.
You do not have to pay anyone to use any of these.
What firms charge
Published prices of UK marker removal services start at about £299 and go up to about £999, and solicitors often charge £1,000 to £3,000 or more. They write and send the letters for you.
What you pay for
Whoever does it, the process is the same: get the report and the bank's data, complain with evidence, ask Cifas to review it, go to the Ombudsman. What you pay a firm for is someone else doing the work and keeping track of the deadlines.
Warning signs
Be careful with anyone who:
- promises your marker will be removed,
- charges to "delete" a marker,
- asks for your identity documents to request your Cifas report for you.
Only the member that filed the marker, a Cifas review or the Ombudsman can get a marker removed, and nobody can promise what they will decide.
The do-it-yourself option
If you would rather not pay hundreds of pounds but do not want to piece it all together yourself, a do-it-yourself pack gives you the steps in order, letters to fill in and reminders before each deadline. You send everything yourself. See the Cifas Appeal pack, or start with the free route, step by step.
